Car Rental clip taken from Part Troll DVD. Filmed at Hammersmith Apollo, London in 2004

A man who was responsible for ‘one of the worst cases of dangerous driving Derbyshire has ever seen’ has been jailed. Mark Jones was sentenced at Derby Crown Court on Friday, August 12 to 16 months in prison after pleading guilty to dangerous driving. He was also disqualified from driving for five years. South Yorkshire Police contacted Derbyshire Constabulary at 12.45pm on March 18 to report that a Vauxhall Insignia had failed to stop when requested to by their officers and was now heading down the M1 into Derbyshire. Officers pursued him along the M1, where he drove on the hard shoulder, narrowly missing several cars and lorries. At one point, he drove the wrong way down the carriageway. He then drove along the A38 to Ripley, weaving between traffic, before officers detained him on the A38, prior to junction 28 of the M1. Before he was apprehended at 1.19pm, Jones collided with several cars, rammed police vehicles and at times, drove at 120mph. Derbyshire police have today released footage from the North Midland Helicopter Support Unit, which filmed the pursuit from the air. Officer in the case PC Mark Hallam, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: “This was probably one of the worst cases of dangerous driving Derbyshire has ever seen. He rammed several police cars, did a U-turn on the motorway and drove at ridiculous speeds on the hard shoulder. “It was a joint effort to stop him in a pursuit that lasted more than 40 minutes.” The court imposed no separate penalty on Jones

At what amount do insurance companies and hospitals consider a bill a medical catastrophy?

Posted by in Saturday, March 31st 2012

Question by labaker75: At what amount do insurance companies and hospitals consider a bill a medical catastrophy?
Within the last 3 months my husband has had two brain surgeries and his thyroid removed…all cancer. We recieved treatment for each, all involving hospital stays, labs, specialists. The bills are literally over $ 500,000 and we are still recieving new ones daily. At what amount do insurance companies and hospitals consider a bill a medical catastrophy and charge these off?

Best answer:

Answer by Lori S
Do you mean a catastropic illness? This type of coverage is usually issued to the 50-65 yr age group and has a higher deductible and co-ins or out of pocket to the insured. Your insurance doesn’t “charge off”. They pay according to the benefits you purchased. Most group policies have a maximum benefit of $ 1 mil. This max is based on what they pay out and not what is actually billed. Most insurances pay a contracted rate to the providers and write off the difference less your deductible and co-pay amounts. If you use a “non-contracted provider” you may be liable for more out of pocket expenses because the insurance benefits paid are less. You will need to read your policy to see how your insurance is written. Explanations of Benefits should also give you info on how providers are being paid. If you have questions, sk your agent or HR dept.

Additionally, if you are having trouble paying your portion, check with your local Health Services Dept to see if you qualify for assistance. Sometimes, hospitals have assistance programs as well.

How do therapists bill insurance companies for couples counseling?

Posted by in Thursday, March 29th 2012

Question by Armored Polar Bear: How do therapists bill insurance companies for couples counseling?
My boyfriend and I have been together for 8 years. We are interested in going to couples counseling in order to work on any issues we have before moving forward. We both have health insurance but with two separate insurance companies. Do therapists typically bill both insurances (meaning we need to find someone that accepts both)? Is the therapy billed differently because its more than one person being serviced, meaning that couples therapy has to be specifically covered by our insurance companies? Any information would be great, thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Josh
Well, insurance companies may or may not pay for this type of service so you might want to check with the insurance company beforehand (or have your provider verify benefits for you). Many require prior authorization – the insurance companies typically want documentation regarding the nature and necessity of these service before approving them. Benefits payable will be determined based upon how your provider bills the claim(s) to the insurer but they shouldn’t need to bill both your insurance companies for the service. They could bill one or the other and just report the code for “family therapy”. Essentially, the therapist would be billing for one of you as the patient and telling the insurance company that the patient’s family was present during the session. Knowing that, you’d probably want to use the insurance with the most generous coverage for this type of service.

Now, while I’m a health insurance claims analyst and have been for years, I will admit that mental health has become a rather specialized benefit area. These types of benefits are nowadays handled more and more by insurance companies/subsidiaries of insurance companies devoted specifically to behavioral health and this area isn’t my forte. I figured I would give you my thinking since I saw that nobody else had yet answered. Hopefully, someone with more specific experience in mental health benefits might answer as well ;)

Q&A: Can a Tennessee hospital refuse to bill your insurance company and bill you instead?

Posted by in Thursday, March 22nd 2012

Question by : Can a Tennessee hospital refuse to bill your insurance company and bill you instead?
A Tennessee hospital refused to bill my insurance company and attached a lien to my settlement for the full amount of the bill. They would have got a discount rate if they billed the insurance company.

Best answer:

Answer by Steve D
If the hospital is not a member of the insurers network, they are billing you since they don’t want the discount rate, they want the full payment. You are expected in turn to submit the claim to your insurance company.

Assuming you went out-of-network, it is likely that you will only be covered for 60 to 70% of the bill and expected to pay the difference.

However, if the hospital is in your insurers network, you need to complain to your insurer. This is deemed balance billing and is usually against the contract and/or state law.

Big Gov’t Forces Health Care Bill Despite Bi-partisan Opposition

Posted by in Friday, March 02nd 2012

www.infowars.com IN A SPECIAL NEWS BULLETIN, Alex Jones warns against the Big Government, Big Insurance Health Care Bill being forced down in the Senate despite opposition by members in both parties and an overwhelming majority of Americans. After all the denial, the final version of the bill proves to have in place the so-called death panels, the abortion funding, no public option, cuts in Medicare and forced coverage backed by heavy fines or prison. Outrageously, Senator Reid & co. have added a section to the bill, Section 3403, that prevents any future Congress from changing the Medicare Advisory Boards (ie the ‘death panels’). Section 3403 reads “it shall not be in order in the Senate or the House of Representatives to consider any bill, resolution, amendment, or conference report that would repeal or otherwise change this subsection.” Watch the video for Alex’s full analysis. Bill Moyers on Max Baucus and Senate health insurance reform bill

Posted by in Tuesday, January 10th 2012

BILL MOYERS: You know from the news that early next week the Senate Finance Committee is expected to vote on its version of health care reform. And therein lies another story of money and politics. Polls show the overwhelming majority of Americans favor a non-profit alternative — like Medicare — that would give the private health insurance industry some competition. But if so many Americans and the President himself want that public option, how come we’re not getting one? Because, the medicine has been poisoned from day one, in part because of that same revolving door that Congresswoman Kaptur and Simon Johnson were just talking about. Movers and shakers rotate between government and the lucrative private sector at a speed so dizzying they forget who they’re working for.
