I have BCBS health insurance through a company I own. Recently one of our children needed surgery. The surgery was medically necessary and was approved by BCBS.
We knew in advance that because we were using an out of network surgeon (recommended by the primary dr) we would be responsible for 50% of the costs. We also knew we would have to pay the deductible. However, we were never told that BCBS arbitrarily further limits what they will pay to the amount that medicare pays for such procedures. In our case this wound up costing us another $9,000.
None of the approval documentation from BCBS mentions this. The surgery actually cost less than the national average for such surgery.
Once the healthcare situation is sorted out by Congress, we will look for another insurer. I would avoid BCBS health insurance at all costs if possible.
