US House of Representatives Feb.24, 2010 Wednesday 10:00 am CSPAN Representative Anthony Weiner, Democrat representing the state of New York, USA. Health Care for Americans, Insurance Industry Bill is called HR4626 Removing Antitrust Exemption for Insurance Firms. HR4626 amends the 1945 McCarran-Ferguson Act. Democrats are in favor of Bill HR 4626 because it would make the medical insurance industry be subject to the same antitrust laws that all other American businesses have to follow. If it passes it means that both the federal and state governments of America can regulate the fees and rates customers are charged for health care. All Americans would benefit by having more affordable health care. The insurance companies oppose the bill because they want to be allowed to increase rates consumers pay, such as Anthem Health Care Company increasing their rates 39 percent this year in California, while they are making record profits American consumers are going without health care or going broke trying to pay the outrageous fee raises. Republicans are opposed to the bill because they have been getting money from the Insurance companies to block any effort at regulation. Democrat Nancy Pelosi of California, Democrat Peter DeFazio of Oregon, and Democrat John Garamendi, are also in favor of regulating the Insurance Industry so that American consumers will be able to afford health care.

Question by : Who has a better idea for getting health insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions?
The problem is that, without the mandate, insurance companies won’t cover people with pre-existing conditions. Otherwise, people will just wait until they get sick to buy insurance.

So you have to create a system where everyone is insured — a mandate.

OK, if you don’t like the mandate, how would you get insurance companies to provide affordable insurance to people with pre-existing conditions without a requirement for everyone to have insurance

Your solution has to cover the situation where a person gets laid off, wants to start their own business, and needs to buy affordable individual coverage (not group coverage) for themselves and their family.

You have 30 minutes. Begin….now.
“Affordable” Median income in the US is about $ 45,000.
Lenny — thoughtful answer. I see challenges in drawing the line around the condition and other conditions, but it’s a start.
Primo — you’re not answering the question I asked. I’m not debating the constitutionality (although 2 of the 3 rulings favor the mandate), I’m asking for an alternative that will address the issue of coverage for pre-existing conditions.
Jay — I don’t see how this will work. No insurance company is going to accept paying $ 100,000 in hospital bills in exchange for $ 10,000 in back premiums.
“gws35″ — HIPAA Title I doesn’t address my scenario.

Question by : If government will require insurance companies to ignore prior history, how can they be insurance companies?
You are “insuring” against treatment for expensive conditions. Rates are determined by your history of health.

Insurance companies are not just banks that pay for everything. They play the odds which allows healthier people to pay smaller amounts than unhealthier people do.

If insurance companies have to pay for everything, regardless of the person, they will go out of business immediately.

Why don’t people understand this very simple concept?

It’s almost as if the government was going to require that every slot machine at a casino would produce a winning hand. Sure, it would be fun at the casino for a few hours, but by midnight it would be bankrupt and closed forever.

Best answer:

Answer by Anthony
I think most people understand this. I think the presidents idea was that with everyone insured and paying insurance companies would have so much more income coming in from healthy people that maybe they would be able to afford to cover the losses of the not so healthy. will it work i have no clue they may have to pay higher rates with help by the government or turn to government run health care. what i have a problem with is insurance companies trying to get out of covering sick patients because of ridiculous reasons for example if you report a rape to your doctor you can be dropped for “engaging unnecessary risk” that could hurt you health …so if your raped and go to your doctor your dropped if you dont go you risk getting stds even HIV so just dont get raped…. and theres tons of stupid little cracks made up just like this one by the insurance companies.

Question by Armored Polar Bear: How do therapists bill insurance companies for couples counseling?
My boyfriend and I have been together for 8 years. We are interested in going to couples counseling in order to work on any issues we have before moving forward. We both have health insurance but with two separate insurance companies. Do therapists typically bill both insurances (meaning we need to find someone that accepts both)? Is the therapy billed differently because its more than one person being serviced, meaning that couples therapy has to be specifically covered by our insurance companies? Any information would be great, thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Rock, Paper, Scissors
Not all insurance covers mental health (yes that is what it would be classified under) especially if you guys are not married. You both need to call your insurance companies and find out what they cover before using either one. The one that has the best plan (if it covers it) should be the one you choose. You might also want to look into the co-payment to see which one benefits you most. Don’t assume it will be covered. You would only use one insurance, not both because you’re getting help together, not separately. If the center tries to use both insurance companies, that is fraudulent because they should not be getting paid twice for a single session.

Question by : Advantages and disadvantages to insurance companies choosing to be on price comparison websites?
In a particular country, price comparison websites have just arrived to compare insurance products. Companies are not obliged to have their prices quoted on a price comparison website but if they do a commission is paid on any sales through the website. For motor insurance there are a number of companies supplying insurance. Of these insurance companies, company A has chosen not to be on comparison websites but company B has decided to be on the websites. Explain possible reasons for these companies’ decisions.

Best answer:

Answer by StephenWeinstein
One possible reason that they feel sorry for the price comparison websites because they read the answers on Yahoo! Answers and see how frequently user MBR unfairly maligns the price comparison sites. Insurance companies usually do not make business decisions out of sympathy, so this is not a very likely reason.

More likely reasons include

a) not wanting to pay the commissions
b) wanting the business the customers who will only buy insurance from companies that they find on the sites.

that is young and healthy people? In recent years many such people abandoned insurace companies due to skyrocketing preimums which in turn ate into insurance companies profits. How can the governmet help to insurance companies and thier CEOs?

Best answer:

Answer by Fear The Boom And Bust
Despite the loss of more than seven million jobs and the failure of over 150 banks since Obama became president, the Democrats seem determined to destroy what’s left of the US economy. A recent news article reports “the Democratic-controlled Congress approved historic legislation Sunday night extending health care to tens of millions of uninsured Americans…. For the first time, most Americans would be required to purchase insurance, and face penalties if they refused. Much of the money in the bill would be devoted to subsidies to help families at incomes of up to $ 88,000 a year pay their premiums.”

So basically the government is “giving” us health care by forcing us to pay for it. Americans were hit with a similar swindle before in the form of mandatory car insurance. State after state forced their citizens to buy insurance because the politicians just couldn’t bare the thought of uninsured drivers running loose on the roads. The insurance companies gained hundreds of billions of dollars in premiums, and gouged the hell out of consumers charging outrageous rates while the politicians provided no oversight. Then, to cap this swindle off, the polticians allowed in millions of illegal aliens, who are driving around our streets and highways with no insurance, proving that the politicians never really cared about drivers being insured in the first place. It was all a gigantic swindle for the insurance companies.
Well, one good swindle deserves another. Now our politicians are seeking to force tens of millions of Americans, many of whom are in their 20s and 30s and in perfect health, to buy medical insurance. People who refuse to buy medical insurance will be heavily fined. The Constitution does NOT allow the federal government to pass bills that force us to buy medical insurance. A Constitutional Amendment should have been passed, which requires a two-thirds vote, but why should the Obama regime allow the Constitution to influence him. After all, the Consistution says that the president has to be a natural born citizen and Obama has refused to provide his birth records to prove he is even qualified for the job.

There’s one other little problem remaining. The US economy is 70 percent dependent on consumer spending. What will happen to consumer spending when tens of millions of middle class Americans are forced to hand over $ 1000 or more per month to the insurance companies? This new law the Democrats have voted for will eliminate hundreds of billions in consumer spending per year. Why are the Democrats forcing this bill through now? Pehaps this is preparation for an Amnesty for 30 million illlegal aliens. County hospitals are going broke trying to provide health care for millions of poor Mexicans in the southwest US. By imposing a massive new tax in the disguise of a “health care bill”, Obama wil be able to generate hundreds of billions of dollars to continue to provide free health care for a growing invasion of Mexicans. The Democrats next move will be to make them citizens with an Amnesty. After all, that’s the only way the Democrats can make up the votes that they’re going to lose from forcing this health care bill on us.

Question by Robert F: How can I track down Insurance Companies that employ people in different states?
I’m hearing more and more about positions with Insurance companies, where the base company is several states away but they hire someone to do local audits for their company, for example, someone living in South Carolina doing work for the company based out of Ohio. My question is, does anyone know where to find these positions? I’ve tried the basic jobsearch websites but they don’t typically seem to have positions like that listed.

Best answer:

Answer by Jihn
What you are talking about sounds like an independent adjuster. Most large companies sub-contract out claims to an independent adjuster in the event that a claim that needs to be inspected, etc is out of the range of where their permanent adjuster work or if the claim volume is too high for one of their adjuster to get to.
Normally, there are independent adjuster firms that are rather mobile and can work wherever they are needed. You are probably more likely to find a local claims branch office with a large insurance company than an independent claims position.
Unfortunately, the insurance industry is in a tight market right now so many companies are actually reducing their staff right now so it may be hard to find a job opening in insurance for the next couple years.
