Good question and one that is asked everyday by millions of people. Dentistry is something that everyone needs. The insurance companies don’t want to have to pay out any money for any claims. If you go to the dentist, have a cleaning, xrays, exam……a claim is produced…..cha ching…$ $ $ Money has to be paid out. Some people never have health problems, or very few….not many claims issued. Get what I’m saying. They will always have to pay money for dentistry because it is used more often than medical health plans are. Its all about them keeping the money and you paying them for the privilege of having security.

Dental discount plans are not usually worth the cost. Finding a dentist who will accept a fraction of regular fees if they are able to fill appointments will full-fee patients might be difficult. In fact, many people have found that NO dentists in their area (at least, not dentists they would WANT to visit) accept the discount plan.

The State of Montana sued one of the main plans, Ameriplan, for insurance fraud and won. Please investigate carefully before giving personal information to internet-based plans.

Ask your dentist about financing plans through such companies as Care Credit or Dental Fee Plan. You’d be much safer!

Most insurance providers have a list of preferred dentists. You will be allowed to pick from any of the preferred dentists. Stick with a major dental insurance provider so you have more choices. I don’t know if you will find any dental – affordable – dental insurance that covers cosmetic procedures (veneers, whitening, etc.).

Do a google search for Ameritas Dental Insurance. Generally I’d say there is no best for certain plans, but in the case of individual dental insurance the Ameritas plan is the best. I also have some comparisons on my site if you need more information.

It depends on where you live but it’s about $ 30 (give or take $ 10 or so) for $ 1500 a year of benefit, plus vision benefits on some plans. PLUS with the PPO insurance plan you still get the discounts that a discount plan would provide.

There is no such thing for dental. However, if you are not having any issues with your teeth and are looking to just have them cleaned and fluoride treatments every 6 months, you can go to the local dental school for that. Where I live, a cleaning, x-rays and fluoride are around $ 500 in a dental office, but the whole thing is $ 81 at the dental school. There is a dentist and 2 hygienist on staff so you are guaranteed a great cleaning!
As far as health insurance, I really don’t know of one without a deductible. The lowest deductible I had was $ 250 and it was around $ 300 a month. My employer covered it though. Most employers will offer health insurance to their full time employees at no cost. It’s when you add family insurance that it gets expensive. Our current family insurance price is around $ 500 a month.

Dental insurance covers very, very little – even in unions. You’re just as well off paying out of pocket.
